I suppose “Hello!” is as good a place as any to begin, so hi! My name is Rachel and I am a second year summer intern in the Finance Department here at Incepture. I will be a junior at the University of South Carolina in the fall and I’m majoring in Accounting with a minor in Political Science with aspirations of law school.
Last summer when I began working here, I simply had an interest in finance, but was still unsure of what I was going to be majoring in. I spent the summer learning about Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable and the ever important formula Assets =Liabilities + Stockholders’ Equity. I had been learning things like debits and credits my whole life (both of my parents are accountants,) but none of it seemed relevant until last summer when I learned it was the basis for all things financial. I went into my first accounting class last fall, having been warned that it was the hardest class I would take in my 4 years at school, scared. However, on the first day, I knew the answers. I already knew “the formula” and I had already learned the importance of so many other fundamentals. My internship had also helped me determine what I would major in.
Working for Incepture has taught me more than just what it means to be an accountant; it has taught me about a professional environment and what will be expected of me in the future. As a college student, I have a lot of freedom and few restrictions on what I can do. I have the ability to do what I want and go where I want when I feel like it. Interning for Incepture has given me an insight into a corporate environment where I am accountable for my actions and people expect more of me than to just show up for class on time. I have learned about time management and personal responsibility, as well as how to behave in a workplace environment.
I am grateful to the Finance Department and the entire Incepture organization for teaching me so much about school and about life through this internship opportunity.
Rachel
